SUNY Oneonta’s Red Dragon Momentum initiative is bringing advising, academic support, and institutional planning into a shared framework for student progress. The work focuses on helping students accumulate credits, complete gateway courses, and register for the courses they need to continue toward graduation.
The university is developing a Standard of Advising Care to establish a more consistent approach to advising and student outreach. This work is intended to connect academic planning with regular opportunities to review degree progress, discuss challenges, and identify next steps. Navigate provides a tool for coordinating outreach, referrals, and registration campaigns.
Grow, Thrive, Live Days provide additional opportunities to connect students with academic planning and exploration. Strategically placed days throughout the semester are designed to create intentional space for learning, belonging, personal and professional development, and community. The September 2026 Academic Expo brought students into contact with academic programs. Dedicated advising sessions support preparation for Spring 2027 registration through formats such as individual appointments, drop-in advising, and major-specific planning. Red Dragon Momentum connects this work with SUNY’s emphasis on completing 30 or more credits annually and completing gateway courses. Oneonta has established a retention goal of 83 percent by Fall 2027. These are goals guiding implementation, rather than achieved outcomes.
The initiative makes academic momentum a shared institutional responsibility. Faculty, advisors, academic support staff, and administrative offices each contribute to the conditions that help students progress. As implementation advances, the university will monitor credit accumulation, gateway-course completion, registration, and retention to assess progress and guide adjustments.
