JMU’s First-Year and Transfer Student Research Experience (FYRE) introduces students to faculty-mentored research or creative inquiry early in college. Participants join a faculty project, build research skills and connect academic questions to real-world challenges. The semester experience involves about five hours of work each week, or 80 hours total. Students and faculty are paid for their work and mentorship. In 2024–25, 75 students from diverse academic backgrounds took part in FYRE.
