Recognizing Military Experience to Accelerate Degree Progress

UMGC awards eligible military learners credit for leadership and service experience, reducing redundant coursework and educational costs.

University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) recognizes the leadership, management, and professional learning military servicemembers acquire through service. Launched in fall 2024, its Credit for Military Rank program allows eligible undergraduate servicemembers and veterans to receive up to 12 credits toward specified business, management, and leadership courses based on qualifying enlisted rank. In doing so, UMGC acknowledges college-level learning demonstrated outside the traditional classroom, helping learners avoid repeating material they already know.

UMGC reported in August 2026 that the initiative had awarded more than 96,000 undergraduate credits to nearly 20,000 learners since launch, representing an estimated $24.2 million in potential educational cost savings. The university was recognized with the 2026 Tambellini Future Campus Award in the Operations category for using artificial intelligence to streamline the evaluation process. That recognition reflects an approach to improving access and efficiency while maintaining academic evaluation requirements.

Credit for Military Rank is part of UMGC’s broader approach to recognizing prior learning from service, work, and previous education. It illustrates an approach other institutions may consider when seeking to help adult learners apply verified knowledge toward a degree instead of requiring redundant coursework.
